The Palakkad Gap's rock formations are dated to between roughly 540 million and 2.1 billion years old — among the oldest on the Indian subcontinent, older even than the Western Ghats range they sit within. It's the only low mountain pass across the entire Western Ghats: a 979.81 km² corridor between the Nilgiri and Anaimalai Hills, part of a Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot recognised by UNESCO and home to more than 700 documented medicinal plant species.
